Ape Caves
At 2.5 miles long, Ape Cave is the third longest lava tube in North America. The cave was named by the Boy Scout troop that explored the cave in the early 1950s. Up a short, paved trail from the parking area is a staircase descending into the dark depths of the cave. At the base of the stairs the cave splits into two passageways. The upper segment is more challenging, requiring hikers to scramble through 1.5 miles of tunnel and up an 8-foot-tall lava fall. The 0.75-mile lower segment features a broader corridor that is easier to navigate. Ape Cave offers a unique opportunity for aspiring spelunkers to explore an unmaintained cave at their own pace—tour guides are not required here and once in the cave there are no bright lights, man-made staircases, or cement walkways. Visitors should bring sturdy footwear, warm layers, and several sources of light.
